Here is what we do every year at the Smallmouth Rendezvous. Everyone gets and envelope with a hook and materials to tie one fly (no particular pattern). Everyone ties a fly using only the materials in the envelope and their own thread. We have a time limit on tying, usually 15 minutes, and then the flies are collected and judged. The envelopes are numbered so the judge doesn't know who tied which flies. It is interesting to see what people come up with in these contests.
