Euro-Nymph Rod

I'm looking for a Euro Nymphing Rod that won't break my checkbook and savings. I guess something like a 10'6", 3 wt. I would appreciate some suggestions because I've never used or shopped for one before.

I'm anything but an expert, but I've been happy with the TFO BVK 8' 3 wt. rod with the available conversion kit to turn it into a 10' czech nymphing rod. The price of both is still pretty reasonable, and it gives you two different excellent rods to work with for different situations.

Cortland makes a "Competition Nymph Rod". I own a 10'-0", 3 wt. I bought it for the price alone. I'm not fussy about it's performance or quality although I'm a rod builder. I have seen rods in kit form from Hook and Hackle.

I've tried several and it's kind of mixed bag of rod technology pushing the envelop. Besides the length, you want to look for a soft tip, light overall weight, and not too much weight at the tip end.

I bought a Cabelas 10' 4wt CZN first, but returned it as it was just too heavy.

I then bought a 10' 4 wt TFO BVK. I still own it and use it, but the tip is too stiff, it's a little heavy overall, and I've broken it twice while fishing. This rod is is better for fishing a large indicator than for Euro nymphing IMO.

Most recently I bought an Echo Shadow II 10' 2wt which I really like it. This has a much softer tip for loading the rod with short euro nymphing casts. It's also lighter and has a removable butt cap for adding weight to balance with your reel. I think the Echo Shadow II also comes in a 3wt and lists for $250. There's a kit available to extend the length and balance it. It's a really good quality euro nymphing rod for a good price IMO.

Kudos to PT for posting the shoot-out link. That was a good read, but unfortunately didn't include the Echo Shadow II.

Odd. I've got a 4 weight Cabela's CZN and do not find it heavy at all. I guess if you fish smaller waters, might be an issue, but never notice myself. The rod has a soft-ish tip, reasonable backbone, and the fact that you can often find it in the Bargain Bin for around $100 are just some of the reasons why I like the CZN. Throws a dry pretty well in a pinch, which is also helpful. I often regret not buying the 11' last time they were on sale. At $200 retail, one of the better deals out there.
