    Default Fumed Silica

I'd like to buy some hydrophobic fumed silica, if anyone's got some to sell. This is the generic for Frog's Fanny.

Diane, if you have a Micheal's Craft store in the area they have it to dry flowers. Sold by the pound.

Diane, I got mine from West Marine, a boating supply store, as an epoxy thickener which was already mentioned above. Comes in a big can for about $8.00 and weighs next to nothing.

    Some things you should know:

She asked for hydrophobic. This would be the type to coat your flies to make them float by not absorbing water.

The one for drying flowers is hydrophilic, it absorbs water; would cause flies to sink.

Most of the products sold for thickening coatings, including the ones at West Marine, are hydrophilic.

    Hydrophobic is hard to find.

    I found this, the third item down"fumed silica" @ $4.40 a quart

While it doesn't state it's hydrophobic, it is. You can verify it here:

Be careful handling this stuff it's extremely light and becomes airborne easily. Wear a dust mask.

Thanks, folks. I've got it solved. And thanks to flyfisherjoe for the explanations.
