This applies to stillwaters.
Up here in BC, we are not allowed more than one fly on the line, so when fishing chironomids over the shoals, indicators are a must. When fishing drop-offs and deeper water, we will fish "naked," lengthening our leaders 20% longer than the depth of the water. A very slow hand twist retrieve is used, and the strikes are usually not subtle.
