Default Beginner Books... What 's a must read?

OK, I've read though "Fly Fishing 101" a few times and I am ready for more. I understand there are levels and I am not looking to jump any just get an idea of what's what. I am just starting out and I love to read so what are some must read books for beginners? Any input would be appreciated.

Lefty Kehr come's to mind. I have the complete collection of "Lefty's Little Libray of Fly Fishing.
Or Ed Engle. I have his book on Fishing Small Flies.
I'm sure you will get more names here to help your search. Names help when you check out the local libray

Seamus,

I like very much the stuff by Dave Hughes.

Try "Tactics for trout", ... but I'd start with "Reading the Water".

Dave Hughes is one of my favorite authors.

I also like two books by Tom Rosenbauer of Orvis:

(1) The Orvis Guide to Reading Trout Streams

(2) Prospecting for Trout

Somewhere I ran into someone who said that he rereads these two books at the beginning of every trout season to get started.

I can understand that.

I think it also depends on what you're trying to learn. For example, fishing or casting? I just read Master the Cast, and highly recommend it for learning/improving your cast.

A review of it is here: http://www.flyanglersonline.com/review/[/url:ad84e]

There is also an archive of past book reviews: http://www.flyanglersonline.com/review/archive.html[/url:ad84e] that include books on a variety of topics relating to fly fishing.

Depends somewhat on what kind of fishing you are doing and what you want to learn. Are you more interested in boning up on casting, reading moving water, fishing still water, cold/warm/salt water, etc.?

I second BFB's two Rosenbauer books. I reread Prospecting for Trout[/url:cd3e0] just before the season opens every spring (this year was the first I quickly scanned it).

Seamus,

What will you be fishing for?

Seamus:

Master The Cast by George Roberts (very clear, well done)

The Curtis Creek Manifesto (you could teach a kid with this one)

Presenting The Fly: A Practical Guide to the Most Important Element of Fly Fishing by Lefty Kreh (this is the best I've read, the man is on the stature of J Caswell

Last I recommend the Orvis Streamside Guides, as the few I've read and highlighted were quite good.

also: from the Lady of our site:

If you tie you should have the "The Fly Tiers Benchside Referrence" by Jim Schollmeyer and Ted Leeson, it is the best and has every technique for everything.

"A Modern Dry Fly Code," and "In the Ring of the Rise" by Vince Marinaro

In addition to what has been said (all great ideas on what to read), get a couple of books by John Gierach.

There is more to fly fishing than standing in a river waving a stick.
