The larger size makes it a good choice for stripping the good stuff off the stem to make dubbing, or add to other dubbing materials. Adds life/movement. As much as I like it for dries, I like it even...
One other option is a magnifying visor. I have a Baush and Lomb flavor that I got many years ago. The optics are very good, and it easily pushes up out of the way to see around the desk. The only...
Nice and buggy looking. What's the recipe?
Very nice tie, Scott. I'm curious about your experience with that style hook. Used the Tiemco swimming nymph version years ago and was struck by a poor hook up rate, and a lot of long distance...
You might find a dubbing loop easier. Especially split thread. Easy to trap and spin the fibers into a usable form.
Very nice tie, Scott. Did you flip the black bead around to make it easier to keep the beads separated with the thread? (narrow ends facing each other)
All three, but split thread most of the time. I find it easier than traditional loop , and no bulk.
Beautiful ties, Scott. On the Barr variation, did you use the tubing as your hackle post, or just wind the hackle up the thread?
Have used one for a while and like it. The tubing's kind of small, and I wanted to use a larger chunk of wool, so got bigger diameter tubing and a crochet hook of the right diameter. Drilled a hole...
Beautifully tied, like always. Thanks for all the time you take to turn out the SBS's. I wonder if trimming the hackle out of the bottom would let it lay more like a spent bug, with the wings in...
You could also use a synthetic like ice dub or Arizona dubbing in the peacock flavors. They look pretty nice and are durable.
is Hi and Louis a 2000's version of Hi and Lois ?
Daiichi 1167 Klinkhammer hook is very nice. Has a deep bend that gets the body under the film, and the post/thorax rides on top. Mustad c49 is similar and cheaper. If you decide to try the...
Charter cable dropped it a few months ago, also. Yet another reason to hate the cable co.
How about some organza ribbon. Slice it up the middle and pick out the horizontal fibers. It will leave you with an organza "hackle". tie it in, put a good dollop of Zap a gap on, and wind it...
They do float well, but the regular feather has a center stem, with fibers coming off at nearly a right angle, so it traps air well. The puffs seem to clump together faster when wet or fish slimed,...
Try the thread first. utc70,veevus, and Bennecchi all split easily. Go to a fabric store and get the finest sewing needle you can find. It will easily split those threads without spending 30 bucks...
I like the MP tool more for the tables to prep material to go in the clip, than the clip itself. They make it easy to fold cdc or other feathers over, and fold in dubbing, flash etc. with it. I...
I like the tube bodiz OK for larger patterns, but the BWO version they offer is way too big for most baetis flavors that I have seen. I tried cutting it short, but it was still a bit thick. i think...
I also like the jig hooks. One caution though. I have a number of times cast a dropper right off the bend of those jig hooks. I really don't understand the difference, because i never have the...
Yes. crosswise, and then just enough wraps to tilt it up a little, not pulled totally together like a parachute post. About a 45* angle or so.
Like John said a mix of both coarse and underfur works very well. Sometimes on small patterns like baetis, the fullness of the fur makes for a larger bump in the thorax than you want. If you tie it...
Usual. Easy to tie, floats like a cork and catches more fish the more it gets chewed
Might be a good idea to turn them inside out. The inside dries thoroughly, and you'll be able to see vermin before you flip them to wear.
