For smallmouth, I think the SA Frequency Magnum would be a good line. It's rated a 1/2 size heavy and designed to throw bigger flies and poppers.

I agree with the CDC and Deer. Or you can use Elk. For a mayfly pattern, you can't beat a Parachute Adams. Easy to tie and you can use different colored dubbing.

I like idea of using silicone as opposed to using Weldwood that Joe Hyde used. I would think it would be a lot easier to remove from fiberglass it it became necessary. Never thought about...
Some years ago, Joe Hyde wrote an article about building a transducer holder out of sleeping pad foam and glued it to the floor of his glass canoe. He then put the transducer into the foam and filled...
You may have pulled to firmly when extending. I have not had that problem. As suggested, there is a video on Tenkara USA that shows how to loosen stuck sections.

The only fly fishing magizine I still subscribe to is American Angler. And I have debated about letting that go once my subscription is up. I would much rather hold something in my hands and read it...
[QUOTE=CM_Stewart;512606]Very, very few rods are broken by fish, but rather by inattention when putting on or taking off the line, QUOTE]
Yep, as careful as I've been, I broke the tip off the end...
I also have that rod in a 5wt. I am currently using an older (1/2 wt heavy) Rio Gold wf5f line on it. And really like it. Loads well off the tip for close work and longer casts as well. I would also...
I think you 5wt will be fine. Just like all other fly fishing the weight rod you use should be based on the size flies you intend to cast and not on the size fish you are targeting. It's a lot easier...
I've fished nymphs with my Tenkara rod, but do not use indicators. With Tenkara I can feel the take much easier than with my Western fly rod. I also use an orange level line that I purchased from...
I've always used a vest when trout fishing. I bought an Orvis sling pack when they first came out and after a few trips with it just didn't like it. With my vest I am more organized and know where...
I have a 12' Tenkara rod that I bought from Three Rivers Tenkara; threeriverstenkara.com/. I have used it on some spring creeks here in IA and on a trip last fall to CO. Most people starting out use...
Just now seeing this. Thanks for all the birthday wishes. Looking forward to the next 65 years.
You might have gotten more traction on the Tenkara board, but here are some that are available through Chris Stewart aka Tenkara Bum. http://www.tenkarabum.com/tenkara-books.html
Nice video.
Just remind your "beginner" to be patient. If they've never cast a fly rod before, learning on a short 6' - 7' will have it's challenges.
Its made of a braided material. Most likely dacron. I am sure Chris Stewart (Tenkara Bum) will have an more exact answer.
As far as Tenkara goes, I just bought my first kit. I've been fly fishing...
For years I used a St Croix LU 4 pc 6wt when fishing for Smallies. Recently I switched over to a Level 7wt from Rise Fishing Co. I really like the rod. Well balanced and cast and fishes very nicely....
In the summer, whether I wet wade, wear hip boots or waders, I wear a pair of nylon quick drying convertable pants. That way on the drive home, I just zip the legs off and wear them a shorts.

Try Aqua Seal, but my experience as others have suggested is that once the boots start leaking it's time to replace them. I think you can get a good pair of waders from Cabelas for around $100. By...
Just a couple of thoughts.
1. The $50 line that is now cracked behind the welded loop. You could always cut that off and either make a new loop, there are plenty of tutorials on the net on how to...
Dave, if you are referring to Warm Fly (Larry Ofner's site) it's been down all day.
The first graphite fly rod I bought was back in 1990. It was a Sage DS2 9' 6/7 2 pc rod. When I asked the guy in the fly shop why two lines, he said that it was really a 6wt but some folks who are...
Dorber has been selling line for years. Tried some at one point and haven't bought any since.
I doubt that Rio, SA or Cortland will price themselves out of the business. They've been around a long...
