Kids fishing clinic/tutoring

With all the people on this board, I am sure that some of you are doing something with youth organizations, or maybe even on your own with children, to educate them and get them intersted in this wonderful sport we all love so dearly. I would like to hear from some of you on what you are doing.

Some people do not like to talk about the help they provide on an open forum but I sincerely would love to hear what you are doing and if you are more comfortable sending an email I would appreciate it.

hehe JC, yep probably the best fly fishing site on the [url=http://WWW...and:70534]WWW...and[/url:70534] I know the young fishermen are using it too, my grandson visits it all the time.

The reason I ask, I am always running into folks that have gear that they are getting rid of and a lot of it is pretty good stuff that could be used with kids that are learning, and when we moved a month ago, I realized how much of that "stuff" I had and I sure would love to seem some young guns get some use out of it. I would gladly support any one or organization that was teaching youngsters the art and love of fly fishing.

Joe, that is an absolutely awesome program you have there. I know you are proud of it and of your club too for putting that together. I envy you and your efforts there.

I learned through Pine River (MI) Chapeter of T. U. that one of the counslors at "Eagle Vilage" was teaching fly tying and casting to his charges.
Ironicaly one of the members at the local Moose Lodge had just asked my why we didn't do something at his 2 1/2 acre pond.
I contacted Glen Weaver and set up a date to inspect the pond and offered the services of the Lodge to help supervise and provide a picnic lunch.
So, on the 25th of this month we will be hosting 24 teeage girls, most of whom have never fished, to a day of Blue Gills, Bass, Hotdogs, etc.
Eagle Village is a camp for troubled/problem teens, many one step away from jail. Glen has been successful in the past in turning many of them on to fishing. He says that one of the most rewarding things in his job is getting letters from his previous charges saying that they are still fishing and thanking him for leading them to it.

Being a Boy Scout leader and fly fisherman,
I can't tell you how happy I was when the
BSA came out with "Fly Fishing Merit Badge".
To date, I have insrtucted over 50 boys
and helped them earn the badge.
Our troop was one of the first in Otetiana
Council to earn the badge. The boys had a great time, and even caught fish on flies they tied!

Our TU chapter also runs a flyfishing school.

If you are intersted, call your local
Boy Scout office and become a merit badge
councilor.

It's a great feeling to teach something
you really enjoy, and the students do too!

I teach a fly tying/fishing class at out public middle school. I have about 35 kids involved in the club. We just ended the year with a fishing trip. It sounds like I will be teaching the class as a daily elective next year. As far as materials go, I am finding that I need more hooks and marabou, and I only have 2 fly rods with reels and lines. I have 4 more rods, but no reels or line.

There are so many good things going on, and members of this board are behind a lot of it!

For myself, I'm co-advisor of the high school fly fishing club here in Fairfield, Maine, and helped integrate fly fishing into high school phys ed. For four years I had a fly fishing activity here at the Junior High level, and that has been reincarnated into fly fishing in middle school phys ed at the 8th grade level.

In addition, our TU Chapter (Kennebec Valley), comes into the schools if asked and supplies wisdom, tutoring, and gear for fly rod casting and fly tying. I can't say enough good about the selfless nature of this group - sure got me going!. KVCTU also holds a festival on the Kennebec which attracts scores of kids (and adults), and participates in YMCA, scout, Special Olympics, and other activities centered on kids. We stock a Kids' Pond and a second pond that has some kid use. The Maine TU Trout Camp, in its second year, offers 12 kids chosen by essay and recommendation a week long intensive experience modeled after the Allenberry "Rivers" camp, and our TU provides some of the leadership, guides, etc., as well as pays the way for any qualifying kid who lives in our area to attend any of the camps across the nation (we're sending eight this year).

I am so pleased to see all the things posted on this board that are done for kids, and certainly appreciate the chance to confer with all of you virtually (Thanks JC, LF).

Having a place to post needs for used equipment gathering dust is so handy at times. I'm mostly all set, my school and my TU being supportive beyond belief, but occassionally I have a student who needs something and its just a matter of finding it... right now I have a freshman with size 12 feet and 6'2" tall who can't afford waders and doesn't belong to a fly fishing family...
