quick clouser question
hey guys,
that's right i'm still alive... :) how has everyone been? sorry i haven't been on in awhile, I've been caught up at work and changing jobs... busy busy busy.. i hope everyone is still in good health..
on to the simple question...
my friend asked me to make him up a set of flies, he would like 6 of each, a Clouser Minnow set, and a Clouser Fly set....
i cant seem to find a difference between the two... is there?
the difference that i can find is in the variation... one has thread wrapping the the hair to the tail with a beard, and the other has the everything tied in right by the barbell eyes... if this is the difference between the two, which is which?
always a pleasure hearing from you guys,
spoof

these pictures may help to understand the question...

are these different patterns? or variations?
hope this helps, i would consider them variations personally, but he gave me these as an example... any suggestions at least?
he did specify "salmon fly," but if a client buys a few flies to give you as examples of a common pattern, i assume he wants them on salmon hooks...

I'd say they're slight variations on the Clouser Deep Minnow, which is usually just known as a Clouser nowdays. Lots of different ways to tie them; everyone has their own favorite.
We found the most effective (and quickest) version for false albacore was to sandwich gold, silver or pearl Krystal Flash between layers of clear (or smoke) and olive (or chartreuse) Super Hair, all tied on the underside of the hook (the point side, which, with weighted eyes, was the top side) in front of the eyes; nothing was tied along the shank.

Scott

thanks for the reply, i figured as much, but you guys are knowledgeable where i am not...
i am going to have to call him on this one, but what would you suggest, or rather, prefer...
he asked me to use tangerine McFly Foam Egg Yarn for the bodies, my though was to tie it in loose to get the effect of dubbing the body for volume, ie. white buck tail flat on the top of the shank, egg yarn below the shank, some flash, green buck tail to finish, all tied before the barbell, the green buck tail should act as a pseudo weed guard not? (i would be using super hair if i had it, the look seems superior)
or, just wrap the body tight along the shank to create more of a strike indicator...
i pulled this pic off the inter webs as an example... they use hairline diamond braid, but imagine the shank in tangerine...

i honestly cant see using the egg yarn to be visually pleasing, he requested the flies to be natural in color... so... neutral colors with neon...
thanks again for the post.

I have seen both versions identified as the clouser minnow.

i ended up calling him, he wants 6 of both variations, and as for the egg yarn, im to use a small piece to make them look injured...
thanks guys
