Does anyone know the product made by "Minwax" that many tyers use as a head cement.
I'ver searched the product line but there are several possibilities.

Along the lines of Minwax, I've used regular shellac for years, on salt flies to give them a shiny head. Also, on my deer hair "bullet heads".
I have started using Super Clear Lacquer (Qt. goes a long way) thinned with MEK a good bit. If I am actually putting it on the head of the fly and not just to glue it I use Sally Henson's and if I want it really black I use Black Sally Henson's.
SuperSenior,
I think that the 'clear wood finish' that Minwax sells is a 'lacquer' and that it works great for a head cement.
I use another brand, but gloss 'lacquer' is what you want. ANY of them will work fine, maybe better than fine.
You will need to deal with thinner, as it will thicken with time. What I do is keep some on hand 'out of the can' which is pretty thick, and some that's thinned down to almost a water like consistency. This stuff thins easily with readily available lacquer thinner, and thinning it does not degrade it's performance.
One quart, whch costs around $10-$15, should last me for many years (the can I now have is five years old, maybe a bit more, and it's only about half used up-but I only tie about 2 to 3 thousand flies a year, and not all of them get this stuff on them).
Buddy
I use Cellire varnish
I also use Cellier at times. Great head finish! I have a god supply, but it's getting harder to find. I know of only one place, now, that still carries it and their related products!?
(Complete Angler).
i dont tie a gazillion flies a year to justify buying a quart of laquer. griffs thin and blackduck lasts me a long time.
Try what I use....Nothing!! It's quick, fast & easy! The drying time is amazing too!!
