Southern California Surf and Jeddi fising
Just wondering if anyone has any advice on this location. I grew up in Newport beach, for the last 18 years I have resided on the east coast but am taking a trip back to so cal the end of the year. I use to do alot of pier fishing as a youth not since I have been back east. I only started to flyfish a little over a year ago and have only done fresh water, so I have a few questions. One, can I use the gear that I already have? I was going to get a salt water line but can I use my reel and a 5-7wt rod. Also, I see what fish are being pursued the time of year I am going any suggestions on species as well as flies? This is not a fishing trip its a family vacation but I do plan on do a little fishing so I dont want to spend a ton on gear. Thanks in advance

You will want a 6 to 8wt rod matched with some type of sinking line. Interchangeable shooting heads or integrated lines that have a shooting head and shooting line built into a single line by the factory are most commonly used. Examples of integrated lines are the Teeny T and TS series, S.A Streamer Express, Cortland Quick Descent, and Orvis Depth Charge lines. Rio, Airflo and others also make similar lines. These lines have a 24 to 33 foot fast sinking head mated with an intermediate or floating shooting line. Leaders can be simple - just a straight piece of 8 to 12lb mono about 6ft long.
Here are some links to some threads that cover surf and bay fishing in the San Diego area. The basic information applies throughout southern California, including the beaches and bays around Newport Beach.
