Individual taste in books varies as much as the favorite rod or fly.  With that in mind, we hope to review books and videos from the ever-growing fly fishing world, and share them with you.  Books will be the best of all worlds, new and old.  Many of the old books are now available in reprint, and the wisdom contained is timely today.  Others can be found in second-hand book stores, or by mail order dealers. As we find videos we feel are outstanding they will be included. Be assured, reviews are based on what we have actually read, and due to that fact, may not appear weekly.

Steelhead Fly Tying Guide
Ronn Lucas, Sr. recommended Steelhead Fly Tying Guide a few weeks ago, and I was delighted when it showed up in our mail. I haven't tied a steelhead fly in years, but if ever the urge to do so occurs, I have the perfect reference.

Steelhead Fly Tying Guide is a 'pattern book' - but it is much more. The history of Steelhead flies is facinating! The author, H. Kent Helvie also covers style, materials, wet flies, spey flies, imitators and believe it or not dry flies. By covers, that includes specific information, techniques and step-by-step instructions for flies in each of the catagories. You can see examples of his step-by-step instructions here on Fly Anglers OnLine at: The Cummings and Summer Twilight II.

Spey Fly Plate There are ton's of full page, full color photos of everything - materials, feathers, hooks and of course the flies! The photo at the left in actual size is 8 1/2" x 11". You can see the details. Each of the sections mentioned above have at least 2 full page plates of the flies taught in that section. It is really every well organized.

Author H. Kent Helvie Do you know the difference between Spey Flies and Dee Strip Wing flies? The little historic pieces do add an extra touch to this very well written and presented book. H. Kent Helvie not only writes well, he does his instruction in steps which the average tier can perform. Yes, you too can tie these beautiful (and effective flies)!

If you have a Christmas 'Wish List' the Steelhead Fly Tying Guide would be a dandy addition to your library. Or a fine gift to a tying friend. ~ DLB
