Proportionality, balance, scale,
not too little, not too much,
just right, perfect,
trying to be in harmony
with the laws of nature,
that's what it's all about.
Tying flies falls
into this equation.
Flies that are tied
with the harmony of nature
in mind are different
than flies tied without a thought
as to how they fit in with the way
things appear and act in nature.
Baitfish, and for that matter
all organisms that swim in water,
are in a state of equanimity, of rest.
Even those which
are injured and struggling
do so of their own volition
and when they stop struggling
are cradled and carried
by the water they are in.
The water they are in
does not move around them
unless they swim.
They are carried
along by current
and do not move
except by their own power.
Baitfish swim and they rest,
in either case they are
carried along by current.
Flies that imitate baitfish
should have
both of these characteristics
incorporated in their design.
They should look alive
when they are in motion
and they should also look alive
while at rest.
To accomplish this mix
takes real attention when tying
but the rewards while fishing
are extraordinary. ~ Ken Abrames
