I found this site last week by using a duck hunting forum. They had a
some fishing items and I was browsing through and someone mentioned
this site. It is so much unlike other sites that I have been on.
This is what I expected of a forum where the statements, questions,
and answers are of an informative nature with no nonsense replies.
It is enjoyable reading to me and so informative for a beginner
in the fly fishing sport. In a weeks time I have learned and met
a local to enhance my fishing techniques from the forum. In the
past I had a feeling of fly fisherman being of the uppity or smug
class of fishing. I now have a complete different opinion
of the people involved in this sport by talking to the people on
the stream and reading the forum.
Everyone is so polite and courteous with the information they are willing
to share. I hope to be one also who is looked up to in representing
this elite sport. I may be a slow learner, but I am going to get
it right. An old dog can learn new tricks. Many thanks to the
people that put their time and efforts into this forum.
I believe you have just made my life easier.

I just got my first fly rod in 40 years. I fished a fly in the
1950s in the rivers and streams of Northern Califoria, Mt Shasta.
After joining the service I layed down the fly rod. The kids are
raised now the last one goes off to collage in August and it's
time to go back to the fly rod. I live in S. Florida and do alot
of trips thru Central America.I have a 9ft 8wt and go after bass
in ponds around our home and looking forward to our next trip to
Central America. I am just learning to cast again and I enjoy casting
and learning that catching fish which is just a little bonus. I surf
a lot at work and found your site to be the best.

I'm a beginner at fly fishing to say the least,i just got my first rig #4/5 caught a 12in. rainbow first time out, it hasn't been that great the last two times but i'm still having fun.
I have a few flies so far but my question is how do you tell the wet flies from the dry ones by looking at them i know this is a dumb question but i need to know.

I read and studied your seminar on building a first graphite rod. Your directions, photos, and insight were A-one! I just finished my first rod--a 7' 6" 3wt. from a Loomis IMX blank. It turned out looking great, but best of all, it casts like a dream--as good or better than my fly-shop bought 9' 6wt. I even caught a 12" rainbow on the second "wet" cast. I certainly appreciate the detailed information. Well done!

There's more information on this site than anyplace else on the web!
If I could just tell a bit how I became interested in fly-fishing. I was fortunate to have my "Uncle Joe" who was a really good brook-trout fisher. when I was about 20 years old, he took me to his favorite creek in Marinette County, WI. He said to me, "You fish upstream from here and I'll fish downstream". He knew where all the good holes were--and they weren't upstream!! That's why he sent me upstream! As I was working my way back down and at three different times when I was trying to untangle my leader from the brush and I fell in due to overhanging banks and laughed out loud while doing so, Unc Joe, who heard me, knew I was hooked. That was 58 years ago and I'll tell you, that feeling hasn't changed.
Thanks for lettin me tell this story. I have thousands more!
Thank you again.

First time to this site, but I truly love it.. Great information, beautiful pictures, and most of all, everyone seems so helpful. Fishing is supposed to be a gentlemans pastime, yet, more and more Im coming across more and more who wouldnt waste the time of day to help a new, or youngler angler in their quest at becoming better, and more informed.. I think this is sad, as everyone has to start somewhere, and, I, for one am more than happy to offer what advice I can, good or bad to help someone. I even feel it is an honor to be looked upon for guidance..... So, to all my fellow fisherpeople, good luck, and, tight lines...... Shane McMindes

I grew up in Louisiana fly fishing for pan fish. I recently returned to fly fishing when my son took it up after he finished Law School. It has been a super way for us to renew our relationship after his years of school and marriage.
We try to get together at least once a month for a day of flyfishing and male bonding and cigar smoking. He has just started tying his own flys and I can not wait to show him this site. Great info ... thanks

This is a truly awesome flyfishing information well. I use it as a tool just as much as I review it for entertainment. Great Job! Love this site. I have been a fan of old flies for last sixteen years. I got started using them when a freind turned me on to the Double Hackle Peacock. Caught a load of fish ont back in 1990. I looked high and low to find the tying instructions then after two years I found an artical on it and a whole family of double hackles. Tried them all and now the renegade is one of my standard patterns. I was so impressed that I went to the library and spent a couple of months studying old forgotten flies. Well one thing lend to another and now I'm a sport fishing columnist and fly fishing instructor. I just love plugging those old flies in my columns. Besides the old stuff I like your editorials Baloney is my favorite. Told my wife about your site last night she spent the whole evening reading. Great stuff!

"God alots man a set number of hours on earth........the time spent fishing is not counted against it......." (CRS) I dont know if someone else said that or I thought of it myself, it seems that it has just always been in my mind........
Really enjoy this website and like has been stated before I wish this kind of information and friendly banter had been around 50 years ago when I was stealing feathers out of my pillow and thread from my mother's sewing box.........

What a great site to shorten one's fly tying and fly fishing education! I'm sure us old timers (fly fishing 50 years - or more) are jealous - we had to learn the hard knocks way (only spider webs then - no TU - no FFF - just a few books). But we're also grateful for your effort - a check is on the way. Thanks.

Here in Michigan we have some wonderful trout waters. However the River Raisen is only a stones throw from our S.E. Michigan farm. Some of the best fly waters for small mouth bass in the country. The excitment is when that rascal pike grabs your fly and ruins a perfectly good 3X tippet. I have fished in Alaska, the Oregon coast streams, Washington Puget Sound inlets but our great state of Michigan is hard to beat...and the crowds just don't appear.
I notice this issue of your web magazine is sponsored by Cortland. I am still using several 444 lines and I can say from experience....the old peach pals have never let me down. Keep up the good work and tight lines.

I found your site about a year ago,and was impressed. I've fly fished for fourty+ years, but about five years ago I lost the sight in my left eye. I went through a time when I didn't think I could tie flies or fish and do much of a job at it. Kinda gave up,self pitty I guess. The pattern a week got me exited about tying again, wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. If you tie them, ya gotta try them. I don't fish as well as I used to,but it got me going again. Thanks and keep up the good work.....Tom

I just read the Editorial Comments on removing certain posts that some may have precieved as "somewhat less than a Joke". I think this particular comment should be re-drafted and immediately be forwarded (this is not an advertisement) to "American Angler" for their new Rant column. It is right in line with their desires for rants (what else can you say). Thos who are to serious for their own good should meet the "rath of the pen" with far more regularity.

Hi
Through many years of tying, I have discovered that many of the old english ties have worked well here in Oregon. The patterns are simple to tie and delicate and life like in motion upon the waters. I am an admitted soft-hackled addick first, but I am guilty of casting a dry when the challenge presents itself. Oh but the softhackle patterns have proven themselves many times over in so many a different situation and circumstance. From the Santiams, McKenzie, Siletz, Middle Willamette and other not so famous streams of the Willamette Valley - the softhackle has fooled many a large trout.

Love this site. It has been tremendous help to me as I started tying flies just two years ago! I check in every week and support as many sponsors as I can. I enjoy the articles and share many of them with my family. I have turned other anglers on to the site and they all have made very positive comments concerning the information available here. As far as I am concerned this is the premier fly fishing site on the net! Thanks for keeping us informed!

Fly Anglers On Line is a great site and I do check in once in a while just to see whats new. I noticed recently that
a new section has opened up called OLD FLIES AND STUFF. This is a very interesting section. Through many years of tying
and tying the latest so called hot patterns, I have discovered that many of the oldies but goodies prove to be the best.
They are that way for a reason and it took me a while to find out exactly why. I am an admitted soft-hackled addick and
many of the patterns listed in "OLD FLIES...." reflect those ancient and sober patterns that for me have proven themselves
many times over in many situations and circumstances. The history of such patterns has been very interesting to me as well
and the shear volume of information that is in just that section of your web-site is astounding. I have to admit that I have just
begun to look around the hut and see all the good stuff that is so freely offered there. Please, keep up the good work and
by all means keep adding to and updating this particularly interesting section.
Yours, DOUG DUVALL

I have been out of fly tying and fly fishing for many years and recently decided it was time to start again. Fished the Des Chutes, Klickatat, White Salmon and Columbia two weeks ago. Fishing with a Spey rod on the Des Chutes was a new experience. My fishing partner caught several steelhead on flies he tied. I was just so happy to be there with the osprey and mink....I have missed my fishing. This is a wonderful site with a lot of information. Thank You It is going to be fun starting again.

Great website!!!! I'm a novice fly tyer/fisherman. Recently I've discovered that I prefer flies over any other method of taking fish. Yeah, I'm working on ruining my sons too. Even fishing flies for bluegills takes on a new dimension, especially when there are youngsters around to introduce to the joys of fly fishing. Fly tying, beautiful and often functional art.

A year or more back I used to enjoy visiting the chat room & more often than not the room would be occupied.
After a break of a year or so I have tried repeatedly to re visit the site only to find it appears to be empty 90% of the time. At first I thought the time difference may be causing the problem, so tried varying the time both day & night, with much the same result.
Is there a reason for this apparent decline in occupancy?

You are my fly fishing expert. Visit your site several times a week. Thanks for the email advice you sent. I went on my first fly fishing trip with my son-in-law. We didn't catch a darn thing (some seaweed count?) but we had a blast. We fished an inlet in Brooklyn New York not far from JFK airport (believe it or not). We're going out to another bay in the area to try again really soon. Couldn't have done it without you. This site is excellent. Please keep it up 8-)

I haven't been fishing for nearly 35 years. My son-in-law, a New York City firefighter has gotten me interested again. We bought some equipment and we are planning our first trip sometime in September. We want to try Saltwater (he lives in Brooklyn, NY) around old Fort Tilden - Jamaica Bay. I also want to try the Delaware River between Trenton and Lambertville. I've received some great advice from you web site -- keep up the good work. Also, when you talk about the Delaware River, don't forget to mention the New Jersey part. You can go from great trout fishing, to small mouth bass, to huge stripers in one fishery and, at most an hours drive away. Some of the Delaware's tributaries are great as well.
Thanks again,

For many years I used to drive to Guelph to The Casual Fly Tying Club, but because of my shifts, or the hours I start at work it has made it difficult to meet there and I really miss the fun, the friends and the learning experiance from other fly tiers. SO! What I was hoping to do is start a fly tying club in Acton. So if anyone living in Milton, Georgetown, or areas that are close to, if anyone is interested, lets try and meet and see if we couldn't start our own fly tying club. Lets get some ideas as to how where and when. You have my email address. get in touch. Thanks FAOL. You're the best site going. Bar non.

After tying jigs for steelhead for years I have started to try my luck at flies. I want to congratulate you on having the best site I have found for fly patterns and the information on tying them. The only drawback is that I saw the Atlantic fly patterns and now I will be driving myself nuts trying to make a good looking one. Any chance I can send you the bill?

Great site I have spent many hours reading, learning and loving it. I live in noth east Mo and flyfish the local streams. have done it for years and only once have run into another flyfisherman. I am teaching my wife now and my daughters boy freind--gotta pass it on. The otherday I aws on one of the nearby creeks playing with the bass on the 2wt I built last winter and having a great day when a new ranger bass boat came off the mississippi river screamig up the mouth of the creek, one of the fishermen in the boat not knowing I could hear him said look at this cat what does he think he is with a fly rod and vest they had a good laugh but it was short lived as in the next hour I pulled in one after another as they set and watched never getting a bite this turned a good day into a great day for me. do not get me wrong I love all kinds of fishing and do all kinds But it seemed they had no respect for a flyfisherman so it made my day thank you Lord

I've fly fished for years and will always enjoy the thrill of having a trout grab a fly that I tied. Does anyone have a good streamer pattern for WI streams?

Great site.I am very new to fly fishing.so far just practing casting.would love to read articles about fly fishing in Alabama or Tennessee.I know there is one stream below SMITH LAKE that is cold enough to support trout, but there must be some good warm waters for panfish or bass on fly rods.

G'day from the land down under!! Now I am laughing because I was born in Oakland, California and raised on some of the best wild rivers in the world in the Pacific Northwest!! I love the American accent that you all speak here and it's wonderful to feel in touch with home. I have been here 7 years and have recommended this site to more people than I can count. This is by far the best commercial free non-biased(well at least commercially!) site on the planet although it may be a bit addicting at times. Thank you for all your work and it shows that this is a labor of love that you share with a whole lot of folks around the world. Well done!

What a great web site! I am a 71 year old retired sailor who has fished in many places in this world. as a young man I graduated from a throw line to cane pole, and then at 13 I was given a fly rod for christmas, I have never lost my love of fly fishing althow for most of my years I have fished other forms. I decided to again learn the art of tying and fishing the fly, in looking on the web for information I found your site, again thank you for a wonderful source of information, and insporation.
