~ V ~ A variety of flies tied with extra long hackle. Also any multi-colored hackle feather. Similar to Spider Flies, but Variants may have small tails. A thin, nearly transparent feather placed over an inner wing, through which the inner wing partly shows. Term for trailer hair or feather fibers which stream back from body joints. Found mostly on salmon flies. See - Trailers. Commercially made plastic, very thin, which has printed veining. Useful for imitating veined wings of some Mayflies or other lacy winged flies. May be cut to shape and size. Skins from this bird provide a wide range of fly tying materials. Also know as the Reeve Pheasant. Formed of fine hackle tips tied slightly forward over the eye of the hook. They tend to vibrate or move with wind and water action creating a semblence of life to the fly. |
