When Mike Lawson opened his shop in the late 70's, he had these tiny "test tubes" with cork stoppers. Inside the tubes were matchsticks. Each matchstick held (I recall) 6 tiny extended body flies tied by Bing Lempke - sort of a master at tying tiny extended body flies. These flies looked just as realistic as the larger versions good tiers can tie. I really hate that I didn't buy some then. Bing and his friend (Cordes, I believe) invented a device to be used in tying extended body flies. It was an oak platform for your vise with an aluminum pole at the other end of the platform which held a retractor and a hackle plier for holding the extended body material for wrapping.
The flies on Hans' site don't compare to what Bing could do even though some are tied by some excellent tiers.....
