Fiberglass Rods

Hey Phil,

Nice shop at Lake Alfred. I was just there today on a round about way to Lakeland. Nice old antique fiberglass rods at dirt cheap prices but I didn't see one under a 5wt. when a rod "happened" to have a line weight rating on it. Most of those sweet old rods didn't . But from the look of them (diameter wise), I would say that most were 8wts. Heddon and Abu Garcia just to name a few. A couple of nice custom glass rods too. Real nice folks there and lots of great tackle, old and new.

Well Robert if I had known you were coming to Lakeland I would have suggested you try Harold's Outdoors in Plant City. He doesn't have any fiberglass but he has barrels full of 3 and 4 weight rods from bass pro.

FWIW, an olf fiberglass rod may have "HEH" or "HDH" on it instead of a numeric line weight. The HEH would be similar to 4 wt, and HDH would be similar to 5 wt.

Hi Dixie. While searching for older out of production rods, keep a lookout for Orvis Golden A (for amber) glass rods. If you like a slow action rod they really are beautiful casters, and light weight even by todays standards. My 7 wgt is only 3 1/4 oz, and this was in the '70s! I don't know how often they show up, as most owners probably hold on to them. I think these were the last of the glass rods for Orvis. At that point they were transitioning into graphite, so these were the end of that era for them.

Hey fellas, we aren't talking numbers or lettering of any kind on those sweet old glass rods. The only ID on the rods at all were the maker's name. Thanks for the info.

Rusty, Plant City wouldn't have been "on my way" to Lakeland but I will try Harold's if I ever get up there.

I came thru Lake Alfred today but I was in too big a hurry to stop. I did find out that there's a parking lot across the street from Ron's that will hold a semi just fine.
