Methinks you are referring to "hippo flies", (see "Oldest Dry Fly" thread on the main board). I see humongous mayflies on my deck screens and windows during May and June. In fact, I keep a yardstick by the door to measure em with. They come from a small volcanic lake bed in New Hampshire's White Mountains. You would have to use a pterdactyl cock's hackle, the fibers of which are exactly one-and-1/2 times the length of the hook gap, to tie one that would be in relative proportions to the much smaller "Classic Catskill Style Dry Fly."
