    Default Smallie flies

I'm heading over to the Millers River in Western MA this summer and hoping to tie up a decent dozen flies for my trip. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Thanks guys,

The Turkes Tarantula trout flies work great for Bass especialy in the larger sizes.

Doug... I don't know about Mass smallies, but here in Arkansas rust colored woolies work real well. I have one I tie that is a brown over rust marabou tail, peacock body and a very webby silver badger hackle. You can tie it with a beadhead or without. I also tie one with a thick black marabou tail, thick peacock body, (about 6 herls) and a black saddle. I also tie this one either with or without a bead. I also tie them VERY heavily weighted.

I use blue, burnt orange or yellow clousers
the most. I learned a real nice crawfish pattern that I haven't tried yet. Waiting patiently for bass opener on 5/28 to give them a swim.
Other than that wooly buggers, bunny leaches, and Dahlberg divers work good.

Along with the buggers mentioned and muddlers (on top-grasshoppers?....underwater-sculpin?) and a few small poppers, this bug seems to be real effective where we fish smallies in Ca. Mainly the Sacramento R., L. Shasta, and the Russian R.
But then we find it to be quite effective when ever and where ever any fish are munching minnows, from smallies to stripers to LM's to bluegills to......you name it.

Is the head of that fly epoxy or softex?
    Is it weighted?
    I like it.

Epoxy.....over mylar tubing....over body material. That one is about (-)1 1/2".
That one is not weighted. We do some with a bead inside at the nose.....seems to work well, specially for crappies.

    Hello DRG04,
There are two excellent books available specifically for smallies and each has a plethora of fly patterns. Smallmouth Strategies for the Fly Rod by Will Ryan and Fly Fishing for Smallmouth Bass by Harry Murray. Both books have excellent patterns that seem to be successful most anywhere. Hope this helps.

Please don't help a Red Sox fan, please I beg of you, sweeping the Cardinals last year broke my heart, and it still hurts. Please give him the wrong info, tell him to use stink bait and orange glow balls, power bait, and to throw in about 15 rocks right where he wants to cast.
