Not having ever fished for much less caught a trout until I was 46 years old I was happily unaware of the chironomid until about 2002 when I had an opportunity to fish for trout in a lake on Ft. Apache reservation in eastern AZ. My friend who had become a resident of AZ inquired of another fisherman what was a good pattern. He shared a few chironomid patterns he had tied with us which resulted in a successful fishing day. Similar pattern in a red color as I recall. Wish I could justify a trip back to the area, the Mogollon Rim of AZ is one of the best kept secrets in America, don't tell anyone.
