Yes it is really a style of fly, tied with or without a tail. I've never come across any writing saying that they should have a tag if they don't have a tail. Certainly not in relation to the Double Badger. Mine have a tag purely because it is requested by the customer. He says the varnished tag makes the fly stronger. I'm happy to accept this, and do it this way, as it makes them a custom fly. Double Badgers he can get from numerous suppliers, he comes to me for these custom ones.
