Have heard of just the opposite problem. Popular among chironomid still-water fishers, I know several who have surmised that some of the strikes they were getting without hookups were probably on the rings and/or splitshot, so as a rule they darken them with anything from a Sharpie pen to gun bluing solution to cut the shine. Supposedly this has helped.
