No wonder I'm not catching many bluegills. You've got them all!

once had the pleasure of fishing with a guide for 3 days out of 4. the day in between, he went out to a good spot and fished it with the point cut off the hook. the next day we went there with "real" hooks and had a great day because he could tell us definitively what would work, and the trout had not been too bothered.

want to try this with bluegills 'cause i'm tired of trying to get my #12 hooks out of their little bitty mouths.
fly fishing and baseball share a totally deceptive simplicity; that's why they can both be lifelong pursuits.

I like to catch fish. To me, that means bringing them to hand. There are times of the year I will do nothing but C&R, and there are times where I fill up the fish basket. I like to feel the fight and put my hands on them. If I just wanted to watch a take, I could put on a little foam hopper and watch little bluegills peck at it all day long. To me, that is boring. Another thing is you never know what you're going to have on the end of the line. I have caught many different species and several unique hybrids while out at the local lakes. I never would have known what half the fish were if they hadn't been brought to hand. Catfish and drum bite all the time.... fight like crazy!

to answer your question, i think i am going to give this a try.... i get pretty bummed out when i have a fatality on the water....
"a good game fish should be caught again," i don't recall who that quote is from, but i agree 100%.

i have a lot of respect for our fishy friends, and enjoy just being in the water... on top of that, we consider a "landed" fish one that you can identify the species... handling a fish can hurt a fish, especially out of water, if they spit it out 10 feet away i still have a smile....

thanks for the idea.... i don't know why i never thought of doing it before.

if every cast caught a fish, it would be called "catching" not "fishing"

Spoof, Lee Wulff wrote in 1938; "A good gamefish is too valuable to be caught only once". I totally agree which is why I release all my fish, like my big one that did not get away story in the Readers Voice. Larry ---sagefisher---

Fishing from a Drift boat one afternoon we were having so so luck. Landing a few fish here and there, but it wasn't hot. We floated into a side channel, and in about 75 yards of river bank I got 6-7 good takes as we floated through, but did not hook a single fish I was befuddled. Until we got to bottom of the channel and I checked my fly. Broken off at the bend. So I guess I have done it. But I would rather go through that run with a point to my hook next time.

I agree with most of that. The new rubber/plastic nets and a forcep bring the possibility of fish injury to a small fraction, I believe.

i agree that a good pair of forceps, and proper use of a rubber net does decrease mortality.... but there's always the other guy that doesn't practice care when catching and releasing... (my brother is one of them) in the past couple of years i've all but stopped fishing with most of the people i used to fish with.

as for stocked fish... i've notice they are 10 times more likely to swallow the fly then natives...

i also had a fish we named... poor tax... tax was a good fish, we cought him countless times... over the coarse of a year and a half... one day, we went to the tackle shop, and there was a picture of him, with date and location.... and for you skeptics that might try and tell me otherwise (that that wasn't our fish) water like this:

doesn't really hold many 23 inch golden trout...

that fish gave me one of those moments of sheer "oneness" with nature (if you can relate) he was the first fish i have ever seen jump straight up 3 foot out of the water to catch green drakes... that doesn't happen very often on this small stream, especially 4 foot in front of you.. RIP tax....

PS the picture is of my buddy alex, it was his first time playing with his orvis clearwater setup... needless to say, he is in love.

PSS thanks sagefisher, i new it was someone important!

On thing to remember is that bluegill and crappie reproduce in much larger numbers than trout ever thought about.
