    Default Winged Comparadun (oxi moron)

    Hi,

The Comparadun/Sparkle Dun/Improved Sparkle Dun are probably my favorite dry fly patterns. The ONE thing I don't like is that there is no swept back wing impression in the patterns. So, am trying this. It is "half" comparadun with a Zelon wing flared back to resemble a wing.
Let me know what you think: Up or Down - either way, I would appreciate hearing.

In my defense, this is not the best job I could do with it as it is early in the design.

    Thanks,
    Byron

I'm thinking the Zelon doesn't lay back very well. Try one with cdc tips or maybe a loop wing in cdc. I would do it, but your flies always look so good.

Chewydog: Wasn't able to do justice to your idea! This is what I came up with. Perhaps we need you to tie your suggestion for me!!!!

Liking the cdc. Sounds like your up Chewydog for a post with at least one of your suggestions. I'm sure it will look great. If you don't want to go head to head with Byron do the loopwing version so that we can't really compare them against eachother

Met a guy this summer who tied all his comparaduns and sparkle duns with "hi-vis" and claimed to catch more fish with those ties than conventional ones. This is the hi-vis that comes in muted colors, not pinks, reds, etc. Just very sparkly. Guess we'll have to ask the fish, but it looks good.

I like the looks of the CDC version, but as John Scott always says, the fish are always right.

This will not answer the initial question but I'd like to point out the the original 'comparadun' had a hackle collar and a semi-circle wing of deer hair. Just sayin.

Allan, Must admit that I didn't know the "original" comparadun had hackle. I do not believe that the Betters "Haystack" did. My recollection of the work by Caussi and Nastasi did not include a hackle collar. May be wrong though. I have one personally tied by Swisher who claims he was tying the comparadun before Caussi and Nastasi. It has no hackle either.
Could you send me some info on that version of the comparadun?
    Thanks,
    Byron

Gotta impress the fish, not man.

    Chewy dog:
You're exactly right! I didn't do justice to your idea of using CDC I am afraid
Do you tie a lot of loop wings? Think they are elegant. Also think Jason Borger uses them a lot
