WF are vastly more popular because people BELIEVE they can cast farther with them... and the average fly fisherman can't. Just like the average fly fisherman rarely ever sees his backing in the rod guides, and never gets any use out of his super-high-tech-jet-fighter-carbon-fiber-nanotech-multi-disc drag on his reel.
