It reinforces my belief that the tiers before the advent of macrophotography and the internet weren't as "tidy" as some of us are today. In some cases his hackle looks to be a bit long, the body a bit lumpy, whisks slightly askew, things like that. I would also bet that they killed many a trout in their day, and, tied exactly the same, would do so today as well.
