They can be real scrappers on a 1 weight, which is what I do all of my pan fishing with the last several years. Sunfish frequently crossbreed, but you can be pretty certain it's a longear if it has that long ear flap with no red or orange in it. The IGFA World Record is 1lb. 12 oz. caught in New Mexico in 1985....I think.

Thanks guys. Yes, I do agree, they are longear and the fish in the bottom photo is a greenie.

Don't have a 1wt (yet) but have had a lot of fun over the past few years catching these guys on a 3wt. They all seem to think they're about 2X their actual size.
