What I used for surf fishing is a 9', 8wt Redington Crosswater and that works great for me, you don't really have to get all the way "out there" actually I caught my first perch surprisingly near to me. I'm no expert but I'd say that you would do great with a 9 footer. Some people use a 6wt but the winds here in Socal can get a little bit strong.
