    Default Mustad hook question

Okay, I'm trying to organize some hooks. What's the difference in a Mustad 3906B and 3399A? I'm going to search online, but figured I'd ask here to start out with!
3906 is standard length, 1x strong
    3606B is 1x long, 1x strong
    3399A is 2x long, 1x strong

    Maybe?

The 3906 has a tapered eye. The 3399 has a balled eye. They are pretty much the same hook other than that. I'm not sure what the letters are all about.

So I'm guessing the 3399A and the 3906B are both 1x long then... Anybody care to confirm?

One is 1X long and the other is 2X long. The 3399A should be about 1 eye-length longer than the 3906B, which is 1 eye-length longer than the 3906.

Mustad's site is not real clear on the Classic hooks. I am reading it that the 3399A has a smaller head than the 3399. That is in the Classic Series.

If you look at the Signature series, the S70-3399 is 2x heavy while the S60-3399A is 1x heavy. Both are standard length. The S80-3906 is 3x heavy, standard length while the S82-3906B is 3x heavy and 2x long

    Default What I know

    Hi,
I've used both hooks listed. 3906B-standard eye, 1x long, heavy wire, sproat bend. I consider it bordering on a nymph hook, but it can be used for wets. 3399A a ball eye, is standard length, medium or standard wire, sproat bend. It's a good wet fly hook.

This fly is tied on a 3399A:

I honestly have trouble seeing the difference in the eyes... Might just be a pun there... But this should show the differences cleanly.

    All size 14 3906, 3906B, 3399A from the top.

The difference in the gaps is part of why Mustad went to a new system with all of the hooks using the same standard. There is a significant difference in gap between the three hooks, that is not an illusion.

Hap shows it exactly.....they all go up in length 1 eye-length at a time.. The 3399A is 2 eye-lengths longer than the 3906 (2X Long).
