John,

The Clark Fork is the largest river in Montana. It has the highest volume of water flowing out of Montana than any other river. That translates into not too many areas that are good for wading, especially in the sections of river around the area I fish it.

It is a huge river, very wide and the good fishing holding areas are spread over a large area. The best way to fish this river is from a drift boat. Some people do fish it with pontoon boats and do fairly well. It is a relatively safe river in most places.

Access is somewhat limited in many places. North of St. Regis is the least friendly area for wading, since the river is in a very deep canyon. The area just east of Superior and down to St. Regis has a number of boat launching sites, and the road does travel near the river in some areas. However, there is a lot of private property that you can?t cross to get to the river.
