Before moving to the tropics of NJ from Boston, my fishing season mirrored the Red Sox season. Then I moved here last year and January and February seem to be the only time there isn't any open water, and the Sox finally won the world series, so I dropped all of my old superstitions. Even though there may only be one warm day per month, I never really pack away my gear completely.

Down here in the Texas Hill Country, our trout season is just beginning. The Guadalupe River tailwater below Canyon Dam (between San Antonio and Austin) is the southernmost year round trout fishery in the US, with fishing that peaks in November-March. We have holdover fish that survived our hot summer thanks to minimum flow regulations negotiated by the local TU chapter, and stockings are planned by both TU and Texas Parks and Wildlife. Our biggest challenges this year are the striped bass washed over the emergency spillway in a flood three years ago. They are thriving in the river and love to eat trout. We're hoping some enterprising anglers will help us catch and cook these large (25-40 lb) stripers so the trout will have a fighting chance this winter.
