Somebody posted pics last year I think of a "worm" fly tied using a ball like the one you described. Wally World had the balls for a buck near the checkout stands (the ones I saw were in a box that was labeled "dog toys").

Very wiggly (and not scented like most plastic/rubber worms so here in California, they should be usable on "artificial only" waters which prohibit scented materials).
