Is the rod handle and insert or is it part of the entire rod itself.

I think I understand your question. The bottom section of the rod tapers to 1/2" in diameter. The grip is a cigar shaped grip reamed out to 1/2" and epoxied to the blank and the reel seat is attached to the blank. The wood you see under the reel seat is the actual blank, not an insert.
