I'm not sure about the gift certificate . Turn that around. If you've been fishing with your buddy thinking you were doing pretty good and he gave you a gift certificate for casting lessons. What would you think?

Not a subtle way to say your casting stinks.

The baby is doing great - except for keeping us up all night and all... Thanks!

Gramps, I see where you are coming from, but he told me a few months ago that he had been planning on getting me a casting lesson for my birthday until I told him that I had already taken one! So, I don't think he would take it too badly...

I've been thinking about your question since you posted it, and I think I may be able to offer a helpful analogy.

The odds are excellent that you are a better-than-average driver. (Each of us, deep down, knows that's true.) Would you offer your friend unsolicited advice on how he could improve his driving?

I have special expertise in these matters as I, too, once had a friend...

So, he thinks your casting needs help too? Funny situation.

My list of what's important about fishing starts with

    Being there
    Relaxing
    Enjoying the beauty
    Having fun
    Good Comradery
    Looking at the scenery
    Looking for fish
    Thinking about fishing
    fishing

somewhere a ways below that is casting, fly selection and catching fish.

If your list is like mine then don't worry about the little things, enjoy the being there with a good friend.

I once went out with a friend that out-caught me 12 -1. He did not have more fun than I so I guess on the funmeter we were tied.

Enjoy it and if anything you are thinking of doing might lessen the fun for either or both of you then don't go there.

    Jed,

You don't enjoy casting? I love feeling the rod load and unload. Watching the line curl through the air and the fly landing where i'm looking. Inventing new casts that end up working. Casting is a lot of fun to me.

For me it would be the same as your number 4.

A casting instructor told me that he sees people struggling out on the stream all the time. It's painful for him to watch them cast. He'd be happy to help them out for free. But, he won't do it until they ask for help. He learned a long time ago that you can't help anyone until they are receptive.

    Yep here, too.

Just when I think "I should go over and help that poor caster out" I stop because somebody might be watching me and thinking the same thing about my cast!

    I wait until I'm asked.

....and at times, it is painfull to watch

Well, I'm gonna chime in with 2 cents worth.
On the one hand ya got..........Fishin'
On the other ya got ..........Not Fishin'
Well, now, Fishin' is better. The Best, actually, for all the obvious reasons and also for the chance at catchin' fish. Then ya got the other thing, one of your best friends. maybe your favorite. Now, Fishin',
with your favorite friend? Who gives a rip how either one of ya ranks as to casting. Fuggetaboudit!
Just go out there in God's wonderful creation and have fun fishin' with yer good friend. A little friendly, lighthearted competition about catchin', well, maybe, maybe not. What's really important?

My fishin' partner and I have fished together since the 60s

Most days he catches more fish than I do

But I can cast better than he can

    Hey, it's something....
