Chuck,
I?ve never been but, here?s a thread discussing fly fishing from the beach in DR
http://www.dr1.com/forums/archive/t-49363.html It sounds as though inshore fish have been pounded pretty hard by the local commercial guys.
I would contact Mike at Mike?s Marina in Punta Cana DR and let him know when you are planning to be there and the resort where you will be staying. He can fill you in on shore fishing opportunities that may be available. I don?t know him but he has been very helpful to people on other forums like this one http://forums.marlinmag.com/showthread. ... 6&t=560937 and http://forums.marlinmag.com/showthread.php?p=373417
He runs a charter boat fleet, mostly trolling offshore for bill fish, but has recently gotten into fly fishing again, mostly for billfish, and is exploring other fly fishing opportunities down there as well. (Last I heard he has 12 wt gear, as well as conventional and spinning stuff.) It may be worth it to check him out for a fly fishing trip targeting dorado (mahi) or other fish on a fly rod (since billfish might be less plentiful down there, to get a shot at the most action in a one day trip. One way of doing this might be to troll with a conventional spread of hardware and once a mahi is hooked, keeping him close to the boat and fly casting to his big brother. (often dorado will follow a hooked fish). They?ll give your 9 wt a work out. Here?s his website: http://www.mikesmarina.info/billfishonthefly.html
These guys are another option, but you have to bring your own fly gear. They sound enthusiastic, but inexperienced with fly fishing.http://www.puntacanaexplorer.com/
Good luck!
