I fish for Pike with rods in the 7 to 9 weight range. If you are likely to tie into some larger fish go with a 9-wt. They will handle the fish better and they cast 6 inch long flies a lot better. I prefer a 9 foot rod to one thats longer. I tried a few different rods in different weights and eventually settled on a 9' 9-wt St. Croix Legend Ultra.

In may the Pike will be shallow, so nothing more than a floating line will be needed. If you want the flexibility, get the line with a loop to loop connection and a 10 foot length of lead core.

For leaders, and despite what has been posted on this and other sites, I've never found the need for anything more than a stiff 25 lb leader. If you want wire core, some leader manufacturers make tapered leaders with the wire core incorporated right into the leader.
