Erupting Flies
This week I was fishing the spring creeks of western Wisconsin when ,at mid-morning bugs which appeared to be mayflies bagan erupting from the water surface. These flies were not dring and drifting but apeeared to hatch and abruptly take wing. What type of fly could this be?
The tactic of using a nymph dropper on a parachute dry fly was incredibly successful at landing many, many brook trout. Some were in the 14 inch size range.

Most probably a caddis. They bust out wings dry and ready to go.

Definitely sound like Caddis. What river were you on? I was at my parents for three weeks and fished the Rush a few times and did well.

Mayflies and caddisflies emerge. Volcanoes erupt.
Sounds like caddis to me, although some mayflies emerge quickly in warm water. Get a natural off the water or look closely at the bugs on the water. If it's got a downwing, it's a caddis, an upwing, a mayfly.

At the time I couldn't catch the creatures because they would so suddenly appear and fly off. Now that I know they are caddis flies I'll know even better how to fool the fish next time.
Maddog, I was fishing Duncan Creek and Elk Creek in chippewa County. Plan to fish the Rush in upcoming days.
Small world. I grew up fishing Duncan and spent a few days there this past vacation. I have a Ford Escape with Arkansas Disabled Vet tags so you may have seen my truck. I fished around the Camper Sales place off 64 most of the time I was there. Some pretty brookies aren't they?
