Big Blue Gill

I have a pen pal in Southern AZ that has invited me down to fish. He stated 9-14" blue gill! I haven't fished for BG since I was a kid in Illinois. Well, life just took me elsewhere....been back to fishing last 2 yrs. Anywhoooooo....I NEVER imagined there could be a 9" BG...let alone a 14"! All his posts seem true and accurate though. I am sure going to take him up on it. I just still find it hard to think of a 14" BG on a light fly rod.

Gills & redear have been my favorites since I was a little kid. I never have tired of catchin' them. A 9+ incher on a light (4 wt or lighter) flyrod is quite a thrill! You will not regret that trip!...Please report back after the trip.

I have had the joy to hold an 11" monster 'gill, but 14" would blow me away!

There's a huge difference between 10 inch BG and 14 inch BG...not just 4 inches either. I have 10 inch BG in large numbers in ponds, but a 14 inch BG would indeed be a special fish. If this story proves to be true, 14 inch BG, I will be surprised and you will be most fortunate.

In 1997, after a winter where many of the houses of our small town were completely buried by snow, and we had massive flooding later in the spring, I remember my first bluegill of the year. It was all of three inches. After a winter like that, it was like savored just like someone might a bonefish. It was like a jewel in my hand, symbolic of life renewed. They don't have to be monsters to be special. JGW

I don't know if a person's heart could stand fighting a 14" bluegill. I've never seen one that big, even in Florida.
