most toys

I'm new on this site and don't mean to ruffle anyones feathers but the quote I see over and over again - "He/She who dies with the most toys wins", kinda bugs me. Although its probably meant to imply have fun with life, It seems to glorify overconsumption and greed. Seems to me that some people can have more fun with a few toys than others can have with virtually everything. Here in NW Arkansas it recently came out that a top WalMart executive who was making millions a year was caught stealing from the company - as if he didn't have enough already. I think american consumerism has gotten out of control. To be good stewards of the earth we have to try to not use more than what we need. Sure its nice to have some "toys" but its not a competition.

Gee, if that saying "bugs" you, how do you reconcile fishing as a sport with, "To be good stewards of the earth we have to try to not use more than what we need"? Fishing(any kind) is a blood sport. Fish die as a direct result of us having pleasure even in C & R regulated areas.

You want to be a good steward, go plant a tree.

Yes, I think there is a tendancy for those who love/pursue outdoor activities like fly fishing to value nature and other gifts from God, and not material/selfish/greedy things.

Before you chose to wade in new waters I suggest you spend some time checking those waters out....you may be wading through the best fishing.

You have attacked an individual...that's IMHO...[and as I am doing now...you... and fully mean too]...that individual has not been here that long but commanded our respect instantly....

I'm not arguing or disagreeing with your consumerism issue but I am with the forum you have chosen to present it.

Wow, that's as confrontive as I've gotten on this website but it sure hits me wrong....and here's a signature I use once in awhile...

I agree with JC. I like to read the signatures, but I sure don't take them literally. Many are just sayings we have heard & enjoyed. That's how I view hers.
Many of us have signatures & a number of them are clever or humorous. Mine says this site is about sharing, and I feel FG has done a whole lot of that since she's come aboard.

I've thought a bit about this post, and have decided that in order to be objective, or accurate, you'd have to be able to read minds. What's in FG's mind when she posts this? To what degree is jsmarrt "bugged" by the signature? Is he incensed, really pi$$ed, just mildly irritated, or none of the above. He's new too, so we don't have the perspective of a lot of his posts. He doesn't have the perspective of long-time FAOL'ers. I've heard the expression about "toys" for years, and have always thought that if it was your only reason for living, it would be a sad thing indeed. FG doesn't strike me as one having this philosophy. Indeed it appears that she has a very broad, and passionate interest in a great many things. I haven't heard from FG on this, and she isn't usually this silent on issues that she's concerned about. Part of the reason that this signature shows up so much, is that she's prolific with her posts, and has a wealth of knowlege to share. I surely hope that it doesn't mean that she's hurt, and doesn't want to respond. I'll bet you a dollar that's not the case though. She strikes me as one who can take care of herself in this discussion. Let's cut the newbie a little bit of slack, and let the Fly Goddess speak for herself. It probably bothers her less than it does us.

You know, I'm not too smart.I'm short. I'm not particularly good looking.I hate work with an insane burning passion. I like most dogs better than I like most people. In over half a century I have been able to discover absolutely no hidden talents.

But at least I have sense of humor. Go fishin'. Sheesh.

I guess I did ruffle some feathers. Sorry, I didn't mean to attack a person but rather a slogan. I didn't realize it was associated with one person as a signature. I guess I wasn't paying close enough attention. In any case Flygoddess I apolegise if I offended you. I still hate the saying though. And to you who brands fly fishing as a blood sport, I somewhat agree and it dose bother me. I switched to fly fishing a couple of years ago because my fish mortality rate was too high spin fishing even though I altered my baits too contain only one barbless hook. My mortality rate when fly fishing is extremely low. I fish catch and release exclusively - and only keep a fish when I damage it. In any case I guess I should expect a tongue lashing when I tell someone their baby is ugly. Once again my apology
