Thanks for all the info. Has anyone found a substitute for UNI thread? I was told to try a polyester thread from Wal-Mart but I'm not sure which kind or brand name (I don't know much about thread). Thanks for any suggestions.

    Hi,

It might be easier for me to reply about thread types if I knew what you were looking for... did you try Uni-thread and there is some characteristic you don't like? Some people have posted here that they find nymo more bouyant, others like silk for the natural properties, some prefer mon. In Maine and Australia, I know some are trying gelspun.

For me, and for many far more experienced than I, Uni does just what we want, but it's great to have people experiment and then share what they've learned for their situations. Let us know!

Sorry .... Sorry.... UNI is the best, UNI is the best! I love UNI. Give me a "U", Give me a "N", Give me an "I"... Whats that spell?

Seriously though, there are no problems. I was just curious of my options because I wasn't sure if I could get any UNI thread right away and was curious if others have tried anything else. I might try mono as well. I'll be sure to stop back and report.
So far they seem pretty cool. I like the idea of being able to float the leader with gink and the fact that there is really no memory is great. It seems to cast well right from my hand.
I know some people like furled leaders and some hate them. Any thoughts on either side would be great, thanks.

I have been making them with 6/0, 3/0, Kevlar and 2# mono for a while. Depends on where they will be used. I have tried different methods for end loops and finally settled on using a bobbin with a different colored thread or mono tying thread with whip finishes and CA. Works well for me.

Danville thread works good also as I've made many with it. As it doesn't have the wax that UNI does it makes for a limper leader but works just fine as I usually use it for nymphing leaders And I use bees wax on them if I want them stiffer or as to JC's article maybe I should use Viagra for the leaders LOL Later Matt I do use spider wire for toothy fish leaders and Spin could tell you how they work or maybe it was PB don't remember who got the leader. Take a look at this:

Instead of pegs try using empty thread spools (buy a bag at walmart for 1.00) and just screw them down on the 1 x 6
