    Default Question re: guide tipping

    Hi Folks,
our long awaited Fla trip is approaching (Tues.) and my maiden voyage in saltwater flyfishing is scheduled for the following week. Biz conference in Orlando has to get finished first. I have arranged for a guide to take us out for red fish in the area of Titusville (Mosquito Lagoon) for the day and am wondering how to tip for his service. Do I base the tip on a percentage of the total trip fee with consideration of the success of the trip, helpfulness and other factors? Thanks in advance for your help.

You've got the right idea. I don't think there is a 'rule' but do what feels right.

You be very careful in that part of the country. You will be invading the Flats Dude's back yard. He gets pretty upset when a FAOLer comes within 100 miles and does not invite him to go fishing. He is the perfect guide also. I know I have fished with him and love the experience. have dinner with him if nothing else. It will make the trip so much better.

As for Tipping a guide. Go with your gut, you seem to have your heart in the right place (you asked).

WE expect a full report on the fishing and the fun.
Next time come another 100 miles south and we can fight one or two over here.

    Have a great trip

I know quite a few guides in the area. From heresay, it's usually around $50-$75.

    Good luck on your trip.

If guide tipping is like cow tipping, it works best if you catch them while they are semi asleep.

kj...not to be confused with "tipsy" captains which at times are usually asleep.
