I'll be in Clearwater this weekend and have never fished there. Any information would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Ed,

The town just north of Clearwater is Dunedin, home of Honeymoon Island ... site of last year's Fish-In 2005. You can check out some pics by going to the menu on the left.

Snook may be heading out to the beaches through the passes about now. Cast down the beach, not out into the open water. They feed very close to the shoreline.

    Good luck.

Thanks Gil. I was just looking at the Clearwater beaches web page (very nice) and was thinking about heading to Honeymoon Island. The thing is that I'm taking a friend and she has two young kids. I'm going to try and teach them how to fish and want a place that's safe for young children and also fun enough for them to have a good time when they get tired of it (kids).

What type of place is Honeymoon? Would a non-fishing mom and kids have fun there?

PS- In case anyone wants to check out the Clearwater site.

I believe from the write-ups from last year's Fish-In that Honeymoon Island is a State Park. Should be safe.

I'm sure you're right Ladyfisher. I guess I'm a lttle anxious about meeting my friends kids and want to make sure they have a good time.

I'll be sure to report on what I find.

    Thanks.

Honeymoon Island is a state park with beaches, fishing, picnic area and nature trails. Its a beautiful place and the last barrier island you can drive to that is not developed.

If you want to fish it, there are two options right now. You can try Hurricane Pass at the south tip of the island. A lot of fish move through there and you are likely to catch anything. It can be a little crowded (but not by typical beach standards). This is the dog beach, so there are a lot of pooches around.

If you are fly fishing, the better option is Pelican Bay off the nature trail. This area is good for wading and sight casting. This time of year there would be redfish, trout and maybe some early snook. There is a lot of soft bottom, so you need to stay in close to shore until you get to a sandbar of a point about half way out.
