Thread: Punch Yarn Poly Caddis

    Default Punch Yarn Poly Caddis

    Thanks to Jack, I was inspired to try learning how to tie a caddis fly using punch yarn for the body. I'm fairly new to tying and this is my first attempt at a dry. Found a couple of patterns that use poly yarn for the wing. So, I used punch yarn for the body and poly yarn for the wing. What a great pattern for a beginner to try their hand at a dry fly. Thanks Jack for the inspiration.

    Here's the "recipe" I've settled on for now:

    Hook: standard dry, 12-18
    Thread: black or to match body color; I use 70 denier Ultra
    Body: punch yarn; tan, grey, olive or black
    Wing: Poly yarn; white

    Mike;
    Great!! Thanks for the pattern. So far I've sent out 7 batchs of punch yarn and have 7 more to go.
    Hope to see you on the Little Manistee on opening day, you can try out that Caddis!
    Bob Burges and Rainbowchaser will be joining us also.

    It is a thin fuzzy yarn that makes a great dubbing substitute. It is cheap and easy to use. Look up Al Campbell's archives in 2004 and check out some of the "too simple" patterns for descriptions and some pictures of the materials in use.
