    Default October caddis pattern

I was watching the show FLy Fishing the World last night and they were fishing in BC on the Elk River. They briefly showed a foam and hair fly pattern that they use to imitate the october caddis, google has produced the fly for me. Anyone have any idea on what the fly is?
    Thanks

You've already named it. It is the October Caddis. We schedule the Idaho Fish-In in late September to 'maybe' hit the hatch.
It is I think the largest of the caddis,
size 8. It does come in color variations in the same place, from pale yellow body to deep orange.

Some of the folks at the Fish-In used the late Al Campbell's SHWAPF (see his column - SHWAPF Matching hatches with just one pattern) with great success.

Here is my October Caddis Pattern for the Selway/Locha.

    Hook: TMC 200R, #4 - #10.
    Thread: Black, 6/0.
    Egg Cluster/Butt: Light Yellow yarn.
    Abdomen. Rust dubbing
    Thorax: Purple Dubbing
    Wing: Grey Elk Hair.
    Collar: Rust.
(I use a collar instead of ribbing, because I want the body in the water)

When I was there the October Caddis I saw were size #10. Watched them on the stream, the females hit the water hard, to shake loose the eggs. They then immediately lifted off the water and smashed down a little distance away. The fish will react to an sudden smashing of the fly on the water, and immediate pickup. Strange but true.

    When in doubt, mimic nature.
