Thread: Caught up on wire's end

I usually leave a little tag of wire about 1/32 of an inch after a few wraps of thread to hold her down, and tuck the wire tag under the bead. Take a few more tight wraps to really lock her down, and then dub the head.

    Have fun, Jeff

Default Caught up on wire's end

I'm a novice to Tying. I've been tying Bead Head Caddis Larva and after I've made the rig from ultra wire tied it down and trimmed it I keep having the same problem. When I start to finish off the fly using half-hitches the thread snags on the end of the ultra wire and the knot's loop won't close. Usuallly this causes the threads to break off at the wire's end.

Is there a trick that I am missing? Should I try a different way of finishing the fly? How do I keep the end of the wire from snagging the thread?

    Hey Joe,
Bend the wire back and forth until it breaks after tying it down with a few wraps. Do not cut it with scissors or cutters because it leaves a sharp edge.
I do not know where I saw or heard of this technique but it really works.

I finish mine off leaving a little tag in the wire end, bending it over and tying it down with thread, or hackle etc.. This also ensures it doesn't come undone again.
    Best regards and tight lines
