Default Glissen Gloss Fly

There has been a couple of threads recently that discussed the advantages of using something bright such as a white feather, a dab of crystal flash, etc, on the fly to aid in attracting the fish. Based on these discussions I tied some bugs using Glissen Gloss Braid Ribbon #2, color code 7, as the attractor. The body is punch yarn and the hook #12 Mustad 3399. There has been so many variations of flies of this type I assume someone has allready tied something similiar and given it a name, so I won't. Here is a picture of the fly.

Can you please provide a source for the"punch yarn"? I have seen a lot of reference to it but I am unable to locate a supplier?
Thanks in advance,
Mike

Near the end of one of Al's fly tying articles that used Punch Embroidery Yarn, he gave a source for buying it. That URL is no longer completely valid, but you can strip the last bit off to get to the parent site and find a variety of punch embroidery yarns for sale.

Here's the URL that I came up with just now...it should take you to a full list with tiny pics showing color options:

http://www.punchneedlemarketplace.com/shop/cart.php?m=product_list&c=8[/url:febd7]

The article that Al gave the source in can be found here:

http://www.flyanglersonline.com/alcampbell/ac011204.html[/url:febd7]

Scroll down to the second to last paragraph to find his original link.

If you use the "Search" box on FAOL's main page and look up "too simple" you can find several articles that Al wrote that use punch yarn in them. If you get too many false hits on the phrase, set the popup on the results page to "Match ALL Word" then search again.

His Too Simple Mayfly Dry and Too Simple Elk Hair Caddis are indeed very simple to tie.

He used punch embroidery yarn in some other patterns as well so you might do better to search on "punch embroidery" (again using "Match ALL Words"). Wade through all of the matches (I had only 3 pages worth when I tried just now) and you'll find some great easy patterns.

It's a type of yarn that's naturally fuzzy. That makes it look very buggy when used as dubbing with the added benefit of not having to add the dubbing to your tying thread since it's already one piece...

Kind of an early version of the more recent "CDC rope" which makes tying CDC bodied flies really easy (I haven't yet found a source for CDC rope but then again, I haven't really tried).

I have tied flies with punch embroidery yarn and the bodies come out with just the right amount of bugginess for pretty much no effort. For smaller flies, separate the two strands of punch yarn and use just one.

Numerous pictures can be found in Al's articles here on FAOL or you can see one I tied using this link:

I think there are some metallic versions of punch embroidery yarn which would bring us back to more on topic for this thread...

I have searched many stores looking for punch yarn and have gotten nothing but strange looks. In its place I have been using Craft Yarn from Wallworld, it is multi stranded so the size can be reduced by separating them and as they say if you mist it with water it gets fluffier. Available in many colors as well.

lthrnk,

I had to order my punch yarn over the web (using the site Al gave in one of his articles). Punch embroidery was apparently a short-lived fad that never completely died, but is rare enough that local craft stores generally don't bother to stock it.

The web source he gave is Punch Needle Marketplace and is listed in my first post of this thread if you want to check them out.

I like the Orvis Knot. It is small in bulk. My imperical testing has shown that it is stronger than the clinch knot. However I find it harder to tie than the clinch knot... and takes longer. I don't do the improved clinch knot because for some strange reason it fails on me a fair amount of time.
Here is how to do the orvis knot http://www.orvis.com/orvis_assets/files/index.html[/url:12cfe]

DianeID. I thought that interest in this thread had died so I rearranged my photo album and apparently erased the link. Here is the fly (hopefully). Tim Anderson
