Default any sugestions for seal fur dubbing sustitute?

I came across an older flyfishing book and several pattern call for seal fur dubbing. I think I have seen some somewhere, but is there a more common readily available option that would be somewhat consistent with regards to texture, etc? Thanks for any suggstions, Jim

Paul Jorgenson's Seal Ex is great never close to the real thing. He used it on almost all his flies.

Hunters Angling has both real seal and the
artifical SLF. Type seal into the search. http://www.huntersangling.com/[/url:afb5d]

Thank you both, looks like I'm going to have to make an order, neither of those in the old tying supplies box. I appreciate the replies.

Just an update for you guys - Hunter's Angling was bought out by Stone River Outfitters of Bedford, New Hampshire on October 28th, 2005. They still offer the same great service and products as Hunter's did though. I for one would really like to see them as a sponsor here (and have written them telling them so).

But, so as not to violate another essential element of the fly-fishing tradition, the rocks would have to be quarried in England and cost $300 each."

Other good sources for seal include John McLain at www.feathersmc.com[/url:f42cb] and Jim Smith in the UK, who can be reached via the Yahoo group flytyingmaterialstrading. Both are good, reliable sources of legal seal.

Stone River Outfitters (formerly Hunters Angling) HAS committed to being a Sponsor here. We're working out the details. In fact, Hunters had been invited to be a Sponsor a couple of years ago, the then owner Nick had no idea of the power of the Internet. Bill does. Delighted to have them!

I had a very good experience with...John McLain at www.feathersmc.com[/url:60298] ...recently when ordering some....he even offered to dye some in more insect-like colors then is usually available with seal....also good pricing...

Seal is readily available (and probably cheaper than SLF) from the sources already mentioned. You simply can't go wrong w/ feathersmc.com.

The subs that I've seen subsitute sparkle or flash to simulate seal's transluscence. You're better of finding the real thing.

Jim Smith can be contacted on -

He has a good selection of colours for seal's fur.
