Thread: dubbing tool?

  1. #1

    Default dubbing tool?

I got a tool for Christmas that has a bodkin on one end and a dubbing winding tool on the other end. I am very new to tying and was wondering if some one can explain how this tool works? The only video I have right now is Jack Dennis and it is very good and I have learned alot from it, but didnt see anything about this tool.
    Thanks

Welcome aboard! Coffee's hot so sit a spell.
Do a search over in "Fly Tying". You may find the answer there.
I have the same tool but do not use it very much. It's sort of hard to discribe how it's used. Pictures are best.

I can't find anything on how to use the tool! It's used to form a dubbing loop. You bring the thread through the 2 hooks and then back to the hook and continue wraping to the eye letting the look just hang.
If you check out the Fly Archives in Fly Tying. The 4th qtr. of 2005 lists a Scud, while it does not show forming the dubbing loop it does show how one is used.

Try this page and look at Step 5. Basically the idea is that you make a loop with your thread, apply some dubbing to it (less is more) with or without wax, and you use that tool to snag the bottom of the loop and spin until the dubbing and the thread twist together enough to look right.

I think the tool LearningInBama has is the one with the hook to catch the dubbing loop in, rather than the 2 hook setup of the dubbing twister. LIB, the principle is still the same.
