Yes, the number mirrors the number of anglers and shop hacks that know how much pressure to apply while loading backing.

I think the reel manufacturers are pretty honest and accurate with their backing claims.
You have to keep in mind that all flylines are not created equal. You can purchase DT lines from 80 to 95 feet in length, and weight forward lines from 80 to 120 feet in length.
It's pretty obvious to me that the amount of backing required to fill the reel will vary greatly depending on the exact line used.

All backing is not created equal either. 20# or 30# dacron from different manufacturers will have different diameters. Colored backing is usually thicker than white.
If you use the same flyline and backing, and applied it under the same tension, with the identical number of wraps to move from one side of the spool to the other, then you will likely get the same result as the manufacturer.
I'm with you on this one Benjo, but then again I seldom see it, so it makes little difference to me. I usually take the backing claims and divide by two just to make it easy. Never tried to weigh a reel, tho.

Put the flyline on backwards first, attach the backing and fill the reel. Remove and re-install with backing first. Result - a perfectly filled reel! Now their #'s don't matter. Only takes a few extra minutes.
