Default Amazing Jean-Louis Teyssie Flies!!!

    Dear all,

I would like to point you to my friend, Jean-Louis Teyssie's eye-opening fly patterns that straddle between impressionism and realism. You will be amazed with his creative fly patterns and other close-up photos of real insects.

    http://teyssie.free.fr/Artificielles/Artificielle.htm[/url:05ff8]

Because Jean-Louis is French, you may need translation to read his text associated with his fly patterns. For the translated version, click the following link below although I am not sure how long it will work.

    http:// translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fteyssie.free.fr%2FArtific ielles%2FArtificielle.htm&langpair=fr%7Cen&hl=en&i e=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&prev=%2Flanguage_tools[/url:05ff8]

In case the above translated version no longer works, you can use Google Language Tools for translation of the website.

    http://www.google.com/language_tools[/url:05ff8]

Copy and paste Jean-Luois' web address into "Translate a web page" section, and set "French to English." Then, you can navigate the translated version of his website just like you do FAOL while reading his explanation of his flies and fishing.

    Enjoy it.

Wow! Those are some amazing flies!! Does he actually fish with them or are the decorative only?

    Tim S,

As far as I know, most of them are his go-to flies. I guess that he would not fish with the most ultra-realistic flies like his bat fly or mantis fly. But, other than those possible exceptions, most, including his tube bodiz flies, are designed to catch fish, not fishermen.

Tell him to pack his flies and bring you to Florida. I'll bet we could catch dozens of different fish on his flies.

I wish I could sit with this man and just discuss what he does. It is truly wonderful work.

Thank you for the link. I will study his site in detail.

I think these flies are beautiful, and obviously people can tie whatever works for them. I went through my own "stage" of this and found though the flies looked great, they did not work anywhere near as well as the more impressionistic versions.

I think it is because of movement, in that the more realistic flies don't have the action, kind of by design.

I actually think the older style flies look great (or better).

    Dear rriver,

I am not a big fan of ultra-realistic flies, either. As you said it, movement, flash, and profile (how a fly sits on, in, or below the surface film) give artificial flies lifelike qualities that are essential for inducing fish to take them. Usually, ultra-realistic flies merely imitate the (outer) appearances of the natural without exaggerating those key triggers. That's why Gary LaFontaine is the greatest fly designer to me. In this sense, I agree with you.

However, in his website, there are as many impressionistic flies that I think highly of as ultra-realitic ones. Especially, his tube bodiz flies - extended body flies made out of silicone and dubbing - have been consistently working for me. I would rather not lump all of his flies together as ultra-realistic because his fly patterns show wide diversity.

Anyway, you have an absolute right to differ, and that is what makes fly fishing and tying more fun.

I don't really disagree. To some extent, it is also the river. I have a friend who fishes the Klamath (south of me) who uses flies that are so flashy, they would catch next to nothing on the Rogue. Oliver Edwards uses very drab colors that would also be tough to get a bite on in the Rogue. Here, you have to have some flash, but not too much. Why this is, I have no idea, I just have enough experience on this river to know what the right amount is.

I only fish with flies I tie, and I don't notice how much I change the same fly until I run across the April version of the fly I'm using and it's August. The size is bigger/smaller, colors a different shade, etc.

It is always what works for the individual person.

By the way, I took another look. His version of the fluttering caddis is excellent.
